Ringlock vs Cuplock Scaffolding: Choosing the Right System

Two modular scaffold systems that look similar and behave differently. Where each one earns its place, and what CE certification actually covers.

Ringlock and cuplock are both modular steel scaffold systems, both erected without loose couplers, and both widely specified. They are not interchangeable, and the difference matters most on the jobs where you can least afford to get it wrong.

The mechanical difference

Cuplock uses a fixed bottom cup and a sliding top cup at each node. Up to four ledgers drop into the bottom cup, the top cup slides down and a hammer blow locks all four at once. It is fast, it is simple, and it constrains you to four directions at 90°.

Ringlock uses a forged rosette with eight openings — four large, four small. Each ledger or brace is locked individually with its own wedge. That is one more hammer blow per connection, in exchange for eight directions including diagonals.

Where cuplock wins

On a regular rectangular grid — a slab shoring deck, a straight façade run, a repetitive birdcage — cuplock is genuinely quicker. One blow locks four members. If your geometry is simple and repeated across a large area, that advantage compounds fast.

Where ringlock wins

The moment geometry stops being rectangular, ringlock pulls ahead decisively. Diagonal braces connect at the node rather than needing separate couplers, which means a ringlock tower is stiffer for the same component weight and adapts to curves, setbacks and irregular façades without improvisation.

  • Curved or stepped façades
  • Heavy-duty shoring towers where diagonal bracing carries real load
  • Infrastructure work with irregular support geometry
  • Anywhere the scaffold has to follow the structure rather than the other way round

What CE certification actually covers

This is worth being precise about, because “CE certified” is used loosely in scaffold marketing. CE marking against EN 12810 and EN 12811 covers the system as a defined configuration — specific components, specific spans, specific load classes, verified by testing and calculation.

What that means in practice:

  • Certification applies to the system as tested, not to individual parts bought separately
  • Mixing certified components from different manufacturers voids the basis of the certificate
  • The certificate should be accompanied by load tables and an assembly guide
  • RoHS reporting is a separate matter — it covers restricted substances, not structural performance

Our ringlock and cuplock lines both hold CE certification with RoHS reports available. We supply the load tables with the certificate, because a certificate without load tables is not much use to the engineer who has to sign the design.

Galvanising: the detail that decides service life

Both systems live outdoors. Coating quality determines whether a set lasts five years or fifteen.

  • Hot-dip galvanising at 65–86 μm — full immersion, coats the inside of tubes as well as the outside
  • Pre-galvanised tube — cheaper, but cut ends and weld zones are left bare
  • Painted — lowest cost, shortest life, needs maintenance from year one

We hot-dip everything. On a rental fleet in particular, the coating decision is the single largest factor in lifetime cost, and it is usually made on the wrong criterion.

Choosing between them

If your work is predominantly regular-grid shoring and straight façades, cuplock will erect faster and cost less to stock. If your work involves complex geometry, heavy shoring towers or anything curved, ringlock will repay the extra components many times over.

If you run a mixed fleet, most contractors settle on ringlock as the default and keep a cuplock stock for large regular decks. We supply both and will tell you frankly which one suits the drawings you send us.
